Our Plan
This is an amazing community, full of people who look out for each other, which produces some remarkable things, and is surrounded by incredible natural beauty.
Since first standing for Parliament, I have wanted to do one thing: Secure Furness’ Future. I love living here and fighting for this community every day, whether in Furness or Westminster. But there’s so much more to do to strengthen the bonds between us, to secure investment into the area, and to tackle some of the deep set challenges that exist.
Below is my plan - Our Plan - to do just that, marking the progress we’ve made, and the journey still to be taken.

1. Levelling up Barrow & Furness
With well over £370million in new capital funding for the new Barrow & Furness constituency as a whole, together we're getting on with the job of levelling up Barrow & Furness and improving the local community.
In Parliament I have lobbied Government extensively for more support, and worked closely with the Council to secure Town Deal and Levelling Up funding to benefit our area. I sit on the Brilliant Barrow board to deliver the projects that this money will fund.
The £370million will fund many transformative projects, including: a new university campus in Barrow; a renewal of The Forum and covered market in Barrow; the refurbishment of Duke Street, a new community outdoor hub at Earnse Bay; improved cycling and walking infrastructure; numerous improvements on the A590 and A595, including the Grizebeck bypass; step-free access at Ulverston Station; pocket parks and town centre renewal, and has secured valuable community assets such as The Roxy in Ulverston and Cooke’s Studios in Barrow. And on top of that, Ulverston and Dalton are both being given £3million each in Borderlands funding to direct to local projects.

2. Supporting the shipyard
The Government has backed the shipyard, as demonstrated through the support for the full Astute order, voting for four Dreadnought boats to maintain CASD, and forging the deal between Australia, the US and the UK that will lead to the next-generation SSN-AUKUS boats.
These measures have guaranteed generations of work in Barrow, both in the shipyard and in the supply chain, and will also lead to significant investment in our local NHS, transport infrastructure, schools, roads and rail, and the delivery of much-needed new homes.
For much of this parliament I have lobbied for investment in Furness to support the delivery of this national, and now international endeavour. This work, raising Barrow & Furness with the PM and Chancellor, has led to the creation of #TeamBarrow.
The Prime Minister recently visited Barrow to announce that Team Barrow would be funded with £220million to strengthen our community - £20million each year for the next decade.
In Parliament, I chaired the All Party Parliamentary Group on AUKUS, brining together MPs and Peers from all parties to ensure that this project is understood, supported, and championed in Westminster.

3. Tackling anti-social behaviour and rural crime
Cumbria has more Police Officers than at any point in its past thanks to the commitment by the Government. Working with Cumbria's Police and Crime Commissioner I have secured a permanent police presence in Ulverston and Dalton and convened community and business meetings with the police to tackle anti-social behaviour and rural crime hot spots.
I have worked with the local community to bring more CCTV into the centre of Barrow, and consistently supported youth provision across Furness. Alongside this, I have worked with the NFU and others on rural crime issues, and spoken in favour of legislation that will target such criminals in Parliament.
Tackling anti-social behaviour also means taking back community spaces. This is why I have led campaigns to stop fly-tipping on Barrow Island, helped reclaim backstreets with our All Together Alleys project, and championed pocket parks across Furness.
-
4. Championing the Energy Coast and protecting our environment
I have campaigned for new nuclear in Cumbria in Parliament, and championed renewable energy projects on the Cumbrian coast. Our area has so much to offer with wind, hydrogen, carbon capture and new nuclear. Delivering these means diversifying our economy and creating more high-skilled, high-value jobs.
Working closely with Carlton Power and Kimberly-Clark, I have successfully campaigned to bring a new hydrogen plant to Barrow, creating new jobs and taking local businesses entirely off the grid.
I am a champion of new wind power and have worked with the Port to secure its use to host the new wind farms which will soon be based off our coast. I am also actively backing plans to transform the gas terminal into a massive carbon capture and storage facility, creating thousands of new jobs, helping industry decarbonise, and securing the future of the facility.
I have also championed our beautiful natural habitat, working with constituents on a number of campaigns, and calling for regulators to have the power to hit polluters where it hurts.
-
5. Backing new sports and leisure provision
Local sports provision matters so much for health, wellbeing, and the attractiveness of an area. As Chair of the GSK Taskforce I am working with the local authority, local sports groups, and community representatives to improve the provision in Ulverston, and in Barrow I am working with the FA and local clubs to bring two new 3G pitches to the area.
As Chair of the GSK Taskforce, I am working to ensure that the £2m donation from GSK is well spent at Priory Road, and to secure funding to upgrade that facility further. And I have joined fundraising efforts for Dalton Community Leisure Centre and championed it with the Council when it was at risk of being forgotten.
I have run local campaigns to fund and establish pocket parks around Furness, including the successfully delivered scheme in Argyle Place, with more to come.
And thanks to the +£20million Millom Town Deal, Millom will soon see a provide a multi-purpose community and leisure hub with a swimming pool and 3G pitch.

6. Fighting for our public services and championing local businesses
As Chair of the GSK Taskforce and of the new Ulverston Life sciences and Advanced Manufacturing Park (LAMP), I am working with local leaders to bring new industry to Ulverston.
Through the #TeamBarrow initiative, I am working with the Cabinet Secretary and local leaders to plan for the future and invest in our public services, and meet regularly with local healthcare and education leaders to ensure that their voices are heart at the highest levels. We have secured £220million in funding for Furness as a result of this initiative.
I have convened roundtables with local dentists and GPs to support them and the communities that they serve and led a successful campaign to save Askam’s GP surgery.
I work closely with local farmers, the NFU, National Park, and our rural communities to ensure that their voices are heard.
I also Co-Chair a local SME forum, bringing their views to the heart of Government and ensuring that our vibrant and vital local employers' voices are heard.
